Hurricane Ian - Live: As it approaches South Carolina, the storm regains hurricane strength

Hurricane Ian

Ian, which was a tropical storm for the majority of Thursday, has once more been upgraded to a hurricane as it approaches the South Carolina coast.

Hurricane Ian was "aiming at the Carolinas and Georgia with life-threatening flooding, storm surge, and strong winds," the National Hurricane Center reported in its 5 p.m. ET update.

The hurricane's maximum sustained winds have increased to 75 mph with significant gusts, and it is currently moving north-northwest at about 10 mph.

The statement stated that Ian "may weaken swiftly over the southeastern United States late Friday into Saturday" and that it "might modestly strengthen before impact tomorrow."

After tremendous flooding brought on by one of the strongest hurricanes ever recorded in the United States, dozens of rescue efforts have been underway around Florida.
